Presenting some of the facts and debunking some of the myths surrounding male pattern baldness along with what treatments are available now and what we can expect in the future.
Hairloss Facts
- Hairloss is known to affect about 60-70% of men which includes over 50 million men in the United States alone.
- Male pattern baldness or "MPB" is the most common form of hair loss in men and is caused by a hormonal byproduct known as dihydrotestostrone, commonly referred to as "DHT".
- The "baldness gene" that causes hair follicles to be sensitive to DHT can be inherited from either parent.
- On average, a child has about a 50% chance of inheriting the "baldness gene" from a balding parent.
Hairloss Myths
- Men that are losing their hair have more testosterone. Not true. In fact, balding men have normal amounts of testosterone but their follicles are just more sensitive to the effects of DHT.
- Wearing a hat, helmet etc will cause you to lose your hair. Not true. As long as the blood flow to your scalp is not restricted in any way, wearing hats will have no effect on hair loss.
- Hair loss occurs due to clogged follicles. Not true. It is important to maintain a clean and healthy scalp but this is a myth which was started by "snake oil salesmen" a long time ago.
So whats a balding guy to do?
The obvious choice is to do nothing! Baldness is a natural occurence and nothing to be embarrassed about. Many balding men have taken to shaving their heads and it has become somewhat of a trend to do so. It's not for everyone however.
Luckily, there are some alternatives to shaving your head that have proven effective in treating hair loss.
Effective Hairloss Treatments
- Biofen - this is a treatment that's been available in Europe for about 10 years but has just recently been introduced in North America. There is no prescription necessary and it has been proven to stop hair loss in about 90% of men. Find out more about biofen here.
- Propecia - aka proscar aka finasteride. This drug helps to diminish the effects of DHT on the hair follicles. It has been proven very effective in some men but there are some potential side effects although they only occur in a very small percentage of men. Propecia can be ordered via online prescription here.
